Why It Matters

Piermont Needs You — Not Later. Now.

Volunteer EMS departments across the Hudson Valley are facing a critical shortage of active members. When call volume rises and rosters are thin, response times suffer — and in medical emergencies, minutes matter.

You don't have to be a hero. You just have to show up. The training, the team, and the structure are already in place. We just need more people willing to raise their hand for the community they live in.

"I had no medical background at all. Within a year I was running calls and felt more capable and connected to Piermont than I ever had."

Common Questions

Everything You're Wondering

Thinking about volunteering but not sure where to start? Here are the answers to what most people ask us first.

Absolutely. The overwhelming majority of our EMS volunteers started with no medical background whatsoever. We provide free, structured EMT training that takes you from zero to certified. You'll learn from experienced members and be fully supported before you ever ride on a call.
It's genuinely flexible. Active members typically contribute 6–12 hours a month through a mix of duty shifts and training nights — but you set a schedule that works for your life. We'd rather have a dependable member who volunteers 6 hours a month than someone who burns out after two. Contribution matters; your life comes first.
New York's Length of Service Awards Program rewards active volunteers with points for each year of qualifying service. Once you accumulate enough years, you become eligible for annual payments after retirement age — similar to a pension, funded by the municipality. It's one of the most tangible financial benefits of volunteering in New York State.
New York State law allows active volunteer firefighters and EMS workers to receive up to a 10% reduction on the assessed value of their primary residence for property tax purposes. For homeowners in Rockland County, this can represent meaningful annual savings simply for maintaining your active membership status.
You don't need to live in the village itself, but you should be close enough to respond to calls in a reasonable time. Many of our members live in neighboring communities in Rockland County. If you're close to Piermont and want to serve, we'd love to talk.
EMS members specialize in emergency medical response — cardiac events, trauma, falls, and other medical emergencies. Firefighting members focus on fire suppression and rescue. Some members cross-train in both. There's no requirement to do both — you can commit entirely to EMS and have a full, meaningful volunteer career without ever entering a burning building.
